So, the big announcement has been made!!! The 2018 Pantone Color of The Year is ULTRA-VIOLET! I know....I was equally as shocked at first.
I'm pretty sure that in last year I had officially written off the color purple as a no-go for future design projects....but then, ULTRA-VIOLET happened. Y'all, I'm obsessed. I started Pinterest searching and I'm telling you, not only is this an AMAZING color for fashion, but it is an AMAZING color for Interior Design. Yes, it's bold. Very bold. But have no fear!!! It is just color. And guess what? Color is not forever. It's like when people say "it's just a hair" when you get a haircut...it will grow back! Now while color will not grow back like hair....you can certainly change it whenever you want.
A lot of my clients will say that they like color..but they are afraid that if they do anything but neutrals, they won't like it. I am here to tell you that it IS possible to bring color into your home and LOVE IT. If you don't want a whole lot, that is perfectly doable!! Bring in just some simple pops and touches.
So how do you use Ultra-Violet without it swallowing up the whole room? Start by picking accessories. I always tell my clients to buy their larger items, like sofas and chairs, in neutral colors. These are the items that are usually the most expensive and will be staying for awhile. If they buy their larger pieces in neutral colors, they can bring the bright colors (like ultra-violet) into their accessories. What's so great about this, is that if you're 2 or 3 years into having purple all over your living room, you can easily exchange those small items for items in a new color...like maybe that year's popular Pantone color.
The best "interchangeable" accessories are lamps, rugs, pillows, vases, artwork and paint. Paint! Don't forget about accent walls! Paint the wall behind your sofa (or some other accent wall) green one year...and if you get tired of it, paint it blue the next. This is a quick and easy update to your room.
Here are some other ways to use Ultra-Violet.....
